The Great Lakes Kashmir Trek is one of the most beautiful treks in the Indian Himalayas. This popular week long trek passes alpine lakes and wildflower filled meadows that highlight the magnificent beauty of this part of the Himalaya. This is one of the best trout fishing regions of the Himalaya. If you are interested in fishing on the trek let us know and we can arrange a license in advance. While not a high elevation trek by Himalayan standards it’s certainly alpine in character as the region receives significant snowfall. Due to the heavy snowfall the trekking season is only between July and late September. The trek starts from Sonamarg which is 3 or 4 hour drive from Srinagar. The trek climbs through maple and pine before forests before climbing to Nichanni Pass (4080m) and descending to Vishansar Lake on the other side. Continuing from Vishansar we climb Gadsar Pass 13,800ft passing Kishansar Lake enroute and descends to Gadsar Lake on the other side of the pass from Gadsar we continue to Satsar which is a group of 7 seven lakes surrounded by beautiful meadows and snow capped peaks. Continuing from Satsar lakes the trail descends to the pine forests at an elevation of 11,500ft before climbing another pass (13,400ft) and descending to the beautiful lakes of Gangabal and Nundkol. The last leg of the trek is a gradual decent to the village of Naranag where we will find our vehicle waiting to take us back to Srinagar.
